Our Journalism Placements in Mexico
Journalism placements in Mexico are a fantastic way to improve your Spanish, because the incentive to improve is strong, and the range of topics covered in journalism necessitates learning a lot of new vocabulary.
Our volunteers in Mexico work either for newspapers or radio stations in the towns of Guadalajara or Ciudad Guzman. Your role within the placement will depend on your enthusiasm and your level of Spanish, but all volunteers are expected to be committed, take the placement seriously, and work for a minimum of twenty hours per week.
Working for a newspaper, a typical day would be as follows: The day begins at around 9:00 and finishes in the early afternoon. Volunteers work with the editor, who decides on your tasks according to your skills or experience. Days are spent covering local events, finding newsworthy stories, attending press rounds, and then writing up and editing articles. Volunteers also have the opportunity to get involved with the photography side of journalism.
The timetable in a radio placement is similar. The day begins at around 9:30 and finishes at 13:00. Time is spent conducting research on the internet for specific topics or something of interest which could be used on air. Research is also conducted through interviews and observation. The topics covered during radio shows include fashion, current affairs, health issues and sports. Volunteers can also play their own music during the show.
These placements are a great way to really get involved with the local community and learn about issues which affect Mexican people while also improving your Spanish, not to mention your CV!
