Why Journalism in Mexico?
Mexico's beauty lies in its effortless grace in combining all of its faces: beautiful hundred-year-old colonial buildings, pristine beaches, mountains and volcanoes and air-conditioned shopping centres.
Mexicans are a deservedly proud people who are eager to show off their often-stereotyped nation. Of course everyone realizes that nowhere on Earth can put on a fiesta like Mexico, but this is just a small part of the larger cultural picture.
Volunteering in Mexico
For those contemplating a career in journalism and who have a good grasp of Spanish, our journalism placements offer an ideal opportunity to improve on them both. Our volunteers work for radio stations or newspapers in the towns of Ciudad Guzman or Guadalajara. Each volunteer has their own mentor, a professional journalist, from whom they can learn vast amounts. Demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm are essential if you want to be offered a whole host of opportunities to add an impressive sparkle to your portfolio. Previous volunteers have co-presented current affairs programmes live on the radio, written news stories and sports reports and have helped run a hugely popular University radio station.
Why Volunteer in a Journalism Placement?
Experience and cross-cultural exchange! Whether you are interested in pursuing an academic career in journalism, improving your job prospects in the field of journalism, or it is simply something that interests you, our placements are definitely worth considering. We offer the invaluable opportunity to gain experience of journalism in action, while simultaneously learning about a different part of the world, it's culture and it's people. You can take on the role of an intern and be actively involved in the researching, chasing and delivering of news stories. This means that while making your CV vastly more impressive, this placement allows you to experience another country in detail. Through being involved with the media, you will learn about the social, political and economic aspects of the country, whilst also being able to explore it geographically. You will learn about the technical side of journalism, and if you are in a country whose language you already speak, it is a fantastic way to improve those language skills.
